Passers-by, consumers, and individuals thrive in cities. But where are the citizens? What do their duties consist of? What kind of urban planning is more conducive to democracy? What are streets, plazas, benches, and balconies for?

Without citizens, democracy becomes an empty appeal, but one that maintains its evocative power. The republican ideal still stirs, even if future alternatives for social justice aren’t exactly shining brightly. The city is not just a place, it’s also a moral space where the equal dignity of its citizens is the only worthy benchmark.
