Máriam Martínez Bascuñán

Director of the opinion section of the newspaper El País

Graduate in Law and PhD in Political Sciences from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, specialising in political theory and feminist thought. Máriam Martínez worked with Iris Young during a research stay at the University of Chicago. She was also a visiting researcher at Columbia University (New York) and at the Institut d’Études Politiques in Paris. She has made an in-depth analysis of issues relating to migratory policy and deliberative and communicative democracy, with a special interest in the impact of the technological revolution on contemporary political theory.

She edits the opinion section of the Spanish newspaper El País and is one of the signatories to the Renovar el pacto constitucional manifesto (2018), in which 60 leading figures from the spheres of law, political science and history called for a federal reform in Spain to resolve the Catalan issue. She incorporates the gender perspective in most of her analyses, a central theme in numerous articles and her book Género, emancipación y diferencia(s): La teoría política de Iris Marion Young (2012).
