Populism is not a rare disease of democracy, but rather one of its more common manifestations. We can identify populist politics and populist electoral campaigns, but there is no consensus on the meaning and scope of this elusive concept. We don't even know if it is the cause of a deteriorating democracy or a symptom of it. Crises prove to be fertile breeding grounds for populist movements.
Is it possible to breathe new life into democratic processes? Or must we resign ourselves to fighting populism with populism??
