Democracies are inextricably linked to electoral processes. Public policies don’t look after the common good so much as the next election cycle. It could be said that representative democracies are prisoners of the short and very short term, incapable of addressing long-term emergencies.
How do we protect future generations? Who represents those who haven’t even been born yet? What are the consequences of the kind of short-term thinking that is rampant in democracy?
