The French republican tradition and the Judeo-Christian legacy make the idea that we are indebted to each other a central tenet of our moral intuitions. The liberal institutions knew how to combine the demands of liberty and equality, but fraternity was relegated to the back burner. This is how the issue was described over fifteen years ago by Antoni Domènech in an essay expressively entitled The Eclipse of Fraternity.
How do we politically coordinate the demands of fraternity in a time of rampant individualism? Is there any hope if no solidarity can be glimpsed on the horizon?
