In recent years, different parts of the world have experienced a proliferation of reactionary and illiberal movements with wide popular support. It is a complex political constellation that includes features of the traditional far right mixed with new demagoguery that is disconcerting to progressive forces, as this radically alters the rules of the democratic game.
Are we witnessing the democratic self-destruction of democracies? What social pathologies produce these neo-authoritarian symptoms? Is it a reaction to tensions accumulated during the golden years of globalisation?
