Issues related to material equality have become the centrepiece of some of the most heated contemporary political debates. Since the beginning of the Great Recession, concepts such as exclusion, poverty, and job insecurity have acquired much greater public visibility.
Traditional redistributive proposals have received a boost mostly thanks to the momentum of feminism, which has opened up new debates on, for example, the vicious circle of economic and gender inequalities, how they relate to respecting alternate gender identities, and the compatibility of egalitarian programmes with a scenario dominated by an environmental crisis.
What challenges do equality projects face in societies that are increasingly complicated due to their own pluralism and complexity?
