Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860 – 1904) wrote some of the most important works of modern theatre from the end of the nineteenth century to the early twentieth century. A scientist by profession and a man of progressive spirit, he died before seeing the reality of the great social and technical changes which, according to his predictions, would free humanity from sadness, poverty, and loneliness and show the way to a new and happy life.

In today’s programme, we return to some of his works to find out whether, more than a hundred years later, we have moved much closer to that marvellous future. Please do not change stations. If you do, the programme will be closed down.
