Esther "Mayoko" Ortega

PhD in Philosophy of Science

She holds a PhD in Philosophy of Science from the Universidad de Santiago de Compostela, a Master’s Degree in Feminist Theory from the Complutense University of Madrid, where she also received a Bachelor’s Degree in History, specialising in American Anthropology and History of America. Her doctoral thesis examined the biomedical regulation of asexual bodies, gender practices and socio-medical controversies associated with these regulations over trans identities in the Spanish State.

Her research interests are extensive, but invariably connected to and located in the area of social studies of science, gender, race/ethnicity, feminist-queer theory and their intersections. A feminist and anti-racist activist, she is the co-editor of books such as Cartografías del cuerpo: Biopolíticas de la ciencia y la tecnología (2014), is currently involved in the CSIC's R&D project Voces múltiples, saberes plurales y tecnologías médicas.
