Holding a PhD in Philosophy and a bachelor's degree in mathematics, he was a lecturer in Playwriting and Philosophy at Madrid's Royal School of Dramatic Art and is currently the director of the Performing Arts Chair at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. Among other awards, he has received Spain’s National Theatre Award (2007) and National Dramatic Literature Award (2013), the Valle-Inclán Award (2009), the Max awards for best author (2006, 2008 and 2009) and for best adaptation (2008 and 2013).

Notable works include Hamelin, El chico de la última fila, La tortuga de Darwin, La paz perpetua, El cartógrafo and Animales nocturnos. His work has been published in Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Denmark, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, the United States and Venezuela.

Mayorga is a member of the Royal Spanish Academy of Language (since 2019), a full member of the Royal Spanish Academy of Doctors, an honorary member of the Royal Spanish Mathematical Society and a member of the Scientific Committee of Spain’s National Library.
