Emeritus professor associated with médialab and the programme in political arts (SPEAP) at Sciences Po Paris. Besides curating Critical Zones in ZKM (2020), he is also the curator of the Taipeh Biennale of Art (2020). A member of several academies, he received the Holberg Award in 2013. He has written and edited over 20 books and published over 150 articles.

Having trained as a philosopher and anthropologist and later conducted field studies in Africa and California, he then specialised in analysing scientists and engineers at work. In addition to working in philosophy, history, sociology and the anthropology of science, he has collaborated on numerous studies on scientific policies and research management. 

He collected a series of essays in Hope of Pandora: Essays in the Reality of Science Studies to explore the consequences of “science wars”. Interested in political ecology, he is the author of Politics of Nature, on the political philosophy of the environment, Facing Gaia Eight Lectures on the New Climatic Regime (2015) and Down to Earth - Politics in the New Climatic Regime (2018).
