One of the most interesting processes in regard to reversing overpopulation in urban ecosystems is what’s called neo-ruralism or the neo-rural movement. It calls into question the need and appropriateness of living in a city for reasons related to work and easy access to basic services.

Neo-ruralism favours the repopulation and revitalisation of urban centres that are all but abandoned, reinvigorating the agrarian sector in the countryside and fostering the revival of the rural economy. At the same time, the city benefits from a deceleration of its exaggeratedly fast growth and this lessens population density in its urban centre.

It also enhances biodiversity and extends urban green infrastructures with rigorous criteria that combine discipline in urban development and landscaping with improving the quality of life and health of the citizens and reversing pathologies associated with air pollution or increased temperatures.

At the same time, private initiatives such as the adoption of practices linked to agriculture (the proliferation of urban gardens, for example) and creating plant roofs are also worth mentioning.
