Despite the advances in technology and the accessibility of increasingly diverse medical knowledge, the high population density in some urban areas, coupled with indiscriminate consumption, resource depletion, and rising temperatures (due to global warming) and air pollution, among other factors, has led to an increase in and exacerbation of cardiopulmonary diseases.

On the other hand, the threat of new pandemics that spread easily calls into question the ability of our health systems to respond to health problems.

Thinking about the cities of the 21st century, which will see the peak of world overpopulation in 2050, means we need to keep in mind these “invisible variables” in order to enhance their healthcare infrastructures. The architecture and urban planning used need to give priority to the well-being of the city’s inhabitants by incorporating greenery, providing access to high-quality clean water, and ensuring the quality of the air in public spaces.

The application of these and other strategies would have drastic effects on important social aspects such as the desaturation of the public health system.
