Until the middle of the 20th century, exponential demographic growth took place in third world countries, victims of colonialism and the imbalance in the economic and technological development between the technologically dominant countries and the populations being controlled.

A hundred years later, at the height of the digital era, we seem headed for an increasingly global context that affects everyone equally due to the commercial interdependence between countries, human connectivity, and open access to the shared and participative international databases.

Globalisation has given rise to opposite reactions, which make inevitable the need to adopt a critical position that balances out both tendencies: a “glocal” (global + local) position that seeks to benefit from the positive aspects of globalisation and technological development while at the same time fostering a progressive cultural homogenisation.

Design, which is increasingly democratised, must make a clear commitment to incorporating technological innovations when planning smart cities. It must also be willing to create a network of digital manufacturing teams that drive the small and medium-scale production and distribution of everyday objects: fab cities.
