Areti Markopoulou

Architect, researcher and urban technologist

Areti is an architect, researchers and urban technologist who works at the intersection between architecture and digital technologies. She is the academic director of the IAAC in Barcelona, where she also heads the Advanced Architecture Group, a multidisciplinary research group that explores the positive impact of design and science in transforming the present and future of our constructed spaces and the way we live and interact. Her research and professional practice aim to redefine architecture as a performative “body” beyond the traditional notions of aesthetic materiality or normalised fabrication.

She is also the founder and director of the Design Dynamics Studio and co-editor of the Urban Next platform, which aims to build a global network focusing on rethinking architecture through the contemporary urban sphere. She coordinates several European projects that are researching urban regeneration through technologies and multidisciplinary educational models in the digital age.

She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture and Engineering from the Democritus University of Thrace, a Master's Degree from the IAAC and a diploma from the Fab Lab Network’s Fab Academy. She is currently doing a doctorate at the UPC, where she is researching sensitive environments and smart cities.
