Today, the idea of coexistence spills over any physical borders and involves all of us globally. It means essentially collective cohabitation and survival, entailing the existence of an urban being that trusts and shows solidarity with others.

Urban development tackles a series of challenges regarding how we think about the urban ecosystem that we want for ourselves and the generations that come after us. Planning must then be evolutionary and adaptable in terms of technology, demographics, and mobility.

These are challenges posed by the changing dynamics of personal relationships, which partly arise from the increased population density brought about by immigration and the city’s highly interconnected network. They also come from processes such as gentrification, the gradual privatisation of public spaces, and the overexploitation of the tourist industry.

This means that we need urban development that is able to correct these imbalances in order to encourage adaptable and accessible future urban ecosystems which have sustainable mobility networks that progressively blend together central and outlying areas into one.
