Speaking with Joumana Haddad

In this debate, the writer, poet, translator and journalist Joumana Haddad, a feminist and fierce critic of sexism in Lebanese society, deals with how women, through literary expression, are completing a journey that has taken them from being muses (simple objects of inspiration) to creators (subjects) in their own right. And how this transition turns feminist literature into a key factor in the emancipation and empowerment of women.

Literature, as an artistic manifestation, is the reflection of the collective imagination of our societies, their culture and values. Literary production does not arise from an idealogical and conceptual vacuum, but is rather the fruit of the discursive tensions of the historical and social context in which it is created. Therefore, literary work is defined by what it recreates, explicitly or implicitly, and by what it omits, deliberately or not. In literature, in addition to words, silences also speak.

In this context, speaking of feminist literature means breaking an imposed silence that has been perpetuated throughout history. Speaking of feminist literature means speaking about commitment to an unconditional transition in which women go from being 'objects' to being 'subjects' of their own narrative.
